Why it works

Most screen time battles happen because there's no system, just conflict. EarnIt gives students a clear rule they set themselves: earn it before you use it. It removes the argument because the app enforces it, not the parent.

Developed with input from a trainee counselling psychologist with experience in secondary schools, and grounded in research into adolescent behaviour and motivation.

We wanted to share a free app called EarnIt that some families have found helpful during revision time.

EarnIt works by blocking apps like TikTok, Instagram and YouTube on your child's phone until they complete a short revision task. Once the task is done, the apps unlock automatically. Settings are PIN-protected, so only a parent can change how it works.

It is free to download and takes about two minutes to set up.
